The Importance Of Sleep

A peaceful nights sleep filled with rest and regeneration is most important. Ensuring our body’s ability to reset and reduce daily stress is optimal for our health. Lack of sleep leads to sleep deprivation which is caused by not allowing enough time for sleep, or due to a physical or mental problem that prevents restful sleepsleep deprivation can noticeably affect daily performance, ability to react quickly, think clearly and form memories. Lack of sleep means awakening with the body already in stress causing low energy, mood swings, and the immune system to decrease. Insomnia, a sleep disorder where a person may have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, can be looked at as a cause of sleep deprivation. The condition can occur independently or as a result of other health problems such as psychological stress, chronic pain, heartburn, or restless leg syndrome. Other causes of insomnia include certain medications, caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol. It can last for days, weeks, or months depending on how severe it is.

Improving sleeping habits can be done with a few simple lifestyle changes. Avoiding daytime naps can help dramatically. Taking daytime naps can cause sleep inertia and you may feel groggy and disoriented after waking up from a nap. After waking up from a nap, the body has received enough rest to restart. Do not drink any caffeine prior to bed and do not smoke. Remove all electronics from the bedroom including television, radios, computers, and smartphones. Keep the room temperatures comfortable, and ideally on the cool side. Sleep position is also very important to receive a restful night’s sleep. Sleeping on your back is best, but some people snore in that position and it may wake you. The next best sleeping position is on your side, left or right. A pillow between the knees will maintain proper pelvic alignment and a proper pillow firm enough to support the distance between your head and shoulder. The worst position is sleeping on your stomach. A San Deigo Chiropractor can check your spine for subluxation which will help reduce overall pain and aches, improve nervous system, and boost immunity. With chiropractic care and simple lifestyle changes sleep levels improve immediately following.
